Is It Haram To Have A Dog?

Is It Haram To Have A Dog? – In Islam, keeping dogs as pets is generally not allowed, except for uses like hunting, guarding livestock, or protecting crops. This is because dogs are seen as unclean in Islam.

However, some exceptions are made for guard dogs located outside of cities, if they are necessary for protecting a home and no other guarding options are available.

Muslims should avoid activities like playing with dogs, letting them lick them, or kissing them, as this can spread disease.

Losing spiritual rewards may come from inappropriate dog ownership, but allowances are made for working dogs that serve a purpose. The main goal is to avoid keeping dogs solely as pets or treating them similar to humans, for health and spiritual reasons.

Is keeping dogs haram in Islam?

Islam generally prohibits keeping dogs as pets, except for uses like hunting, guarding livestock, or protecting crops. Dogs are seen as ritually unclean. Owning dogs solely as pets or treating them like humans is discouraged for spiritual and health reasons.

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding, hunting or farming, one qirat will be deducted from his reward each day.”

How To Keep Dog In Halal Way?

If you want to keep the dog while following Islamic teachings, certain conditions must be fulfilled:

1- Keeping dogs in Islam is not permissible except for hunting or guarding livestock and crops.

2- It is permissible to keep dogs for guarding houses so long as that is outside the city and that there is no other means of guarding the house.

3- The Muslim should not imitate others by running with the dog or touching its mouth and kissing it, which causes many diseases.

Is it permissible to keep a dog to guard houses?

Guard dogs are allowed if located outside cities and necessary to protect a home without other options. This concession is out of necessity.

Guard dogs are allowed “if the house is in the countryside and there is no one else around.” (Ibn ‘Uthaymin) This is permitted “based on the reason that is to be understood from the hadith, which is necessity.” (Al-Nawawi)

Does one lose one qirat or two qirats if he keeps a dog? -Spiritual Impacts

Inappropriate dog ownership results in deductions from spiritual rewards. Scholars differ on whether this is 1 or 2 qirats deducted per day.

“Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding livestock or a dog that is trained for hunting, two qirats will be deducted from his reward each day.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Interacting With Dogs

Touching dogs does not require purification, unless their saliva gets on you. Avoid activities like playing with dogs, letting them lick you, or kissing them to prevent spreading disease.

The Prophet (PBUH) said: “The purification of the vessel of one of you, if a dog licks it, is to wash it seven times, the first time with soil.”

Does touching or kissing a dog require purification?

Purify vessels licked by a dog by washing 7 times, last with soil. Wash hands 7 times, once with soil, if touched by dog saliva.

Ibn ‘Uthaymin said: “If he touches it and there is any wetness, then the hand must be washed after that seven times, one of which should be with soil.

Health Risks

Kissing dogs or using unpurified vessels can spread bacteria like pasteurella and parasitic tapeworms, which affect the intestines, liver, and lungs.

“Kissing dogs or drinking from unpurified vessels spreads diseases like “pasteurella which is a bacterial disease” and “tapeworms, which are small worms 2-9 millimeters long.” (Al-Snafi)”
